Scalable Two-Mode 3-Port and 4-Port Mode Insensitive Silicon Photonic Switches

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel design approach for scalable 3-port 4-port mode insensitive multimode switching matrices the first two quasi-transverse electric (TE) modes. The phase shifter ensures less power consumption simultaneous signal transmission in division multiplexing (MDM) network. At 1550 nm, switch exhibits approximately 2.6 dB 3.3 insertion loss longest path with crosstalk of at most 10 8 over bandwidth 40 nm (1530 to 1570 nm) ${\mathrm {TE}}_{\mathrm {0}}$ {1}}$ modes, respectively. measured is 2.7 3.6 corresponding than TE payload also performed using both Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) 14.0625 Gbaud 4-level pulse-amplitude modulation (PAM4) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS)-31 data analyze performance switches. The polarization principal axes and mode field patterns of the modes can be made stable by having different size air-holes along the orthogonal directions.
